Country for Old Men – John Scofield

Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm

Master improviser and 2016 GRAMMY winner for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, John Scofield is considered one of the most important guitarists and composers in Jazz. His influence began in the late ’70s and is going strong today. Possessor of a distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged Jazz, and R&B.

With his latest project, Country For Old Men, Scofield re-imagines the music of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, and other country greats with a top tier band of longtime compatriots including organist Larry Goldings, bassist Vicente Archer, and drummer Bill Stewart. In describing this new area of exploration documented on the quartet’s new Impulse! release, Scofield says, “We’re going to turn ‘outlaw’ country tunes into Jazz vehicles. Rather than go to Nashville and record with ‘real’ country players in a country style, I’m joining forces with my jazz cronies to play the songs with our jazz approach. We improvise while keeping the integrity, character and twang of this wonderful American music. I’ve always loved country music and am super excited to put my treatment of them into play.”
